Exact weighted vertex coloring via branch-and-price

چکیده
We consider the Weighted Vertex Coloring Problem (WVCP), in which a positive weight is associated to each vertex of a graph. In WVCP, one is required to assign a color to each vertex in such a way that colors on adjacent vertices are di erent, and the objective is to minimize the sum of the costs of the colors used, where the cost of each color is given by the maximum weight of the vertices assigned to that color. This NP-hard problem arises in practical scheduling applications, where it is also known as Scheduling on a Batch Machine with Job Compatibilities. We propose the rst exact algorithm for the problem, which is based on column generation and branch-and-price. Computational results on a large set of instances from the literature are reported, showing excellent performance when compared with the best heuristic algorithms from the literature.

An exact algorithm for the Partition Coloring Problem
We study the Partition Coloring Problem (PCP), a generalization of the Vertex Coloring Problem where the vertex set is partitioned. The PCP asks to select one vertex for each subset of the partition in such a way that the chromatic number of the induced graph is minimum. We propose a new Integer Linear Programming formulation with an exponential number of variables. To solve this formulation to...

متن کاملSolving the minimum-weighted coloring problem
Weighted coloring is a generalization of the wellknown vertex (unweighted) coloring for which a number of exact algorithms have been presented in the literature. We are not aware of any optimal method specifically designed for the minimum-weighted coloring problem on arbitrary graphs. Only a few heuristics have been developed with the goal of finding tighter upper bounds for the maximum-weighte...
متن کاملExact Solution of Graph Coloring Problems via Constraint Programming and Column Generation
We consider two approaches for solving the classical minimum vertex coloring problem, that is the problem of coloring the vertices of a graph so that adjacent vertices have different colors, minimizing the number of used colors, namely Constraint Programming and Column Generation. Constraint Programming is able to solve very efficiently many of the benchmarks, but suffers from the lack of effec...
متن کاملA branch-and-price algorithm for the robust graph coloring problem
Given a graph G, an integer k, and a cost cuv associated with all pairs uv of non-adjacent vertices in G, the robust graph coloring problem is to assign a color in {1, · · · , k} to every vertex of G so that no edge has both endpoints with the same color, and the total cost of the pairs of vertices having the same color is minimum. We propose a branch and price algorithm for the solution of thi...
